Does Your Sunscreen Protect Against Skin Cancer?

Hello, June! School's almost out and the temperature is rising. It's time to hit the beach. Most of the time we opt for covering up over wearing sunscreen when spending time in the sun, but for long outdoor adventures, we use sunscreen.

Environmental Working Group has released its 6th Annual Sunscreen Guide. Let's review the main reasons you need to consult this guide:
  • Many U.S. sunscreens do not protect against cancer. You need a broad-spectrum sunscreen to block both UVA and UVB in order to prevent both sunburns and skin cancer.
  • Many U.S. sunscreens make false claims regarding SPF. The FDA is looking into this.
  • New FDA regulations will ban the use of certain misleading terms including "sweatproof," "waterproof" and "sunblock," but they aren't in effect until December. According to experts, there is no such thing as a sweatproof or waterproof sunscreen.
  • Many U.S. sunscreens contain sketchy ingredients, such as endocrine disruptors.

So do your homework. Buy a recommended sunscreen, such as sunscreens made by Badger or California Baby. And follow the safe sun tips.

And have a wonderful summer!

  1. I read somewhere that there's stuff put in mainstream sunblock so it doesn't look all white and pasty (something about micronization -- maybe you've heard of this process), making it less effective or something. Anyway, I love the Badger sunscreen -- it works great and it's all white and pasty at first. :)
