If you are going to make all of your own bread, including bread for sandwiches, you will want to have a very good bread knife. I love my Victorinox Wavy Bread Knife, top rated by Cook's Illustrated and not too expensive.
This post is part of Things I Love Thursday.
Posts in the series -- Lazy Person's Guide to Homemade Bread:
Part 1 -- 5 Steps to Get You Started
Part 2 -- Homemade bread even cheaper (buy in bulk)
Part 3 -- Vegan whole wheat bread
Part 4 – Additional bread supplies (nice but not necessary)
Coming Soon: Part 5 -- Special Treats (white bread, rolls, etc.)
This is perfect for me. I totally need a new bread knife. Spanx just added a giveaway to my post so make sure to come over and enter.
ReplyDeleteunrelated questions: who designed your blog? I love the format!
ReplyDeleteOh my, I am so flattered. I made it with the Blogger Template Designer - they have only 6 templates, but lots of variables to manipulate -- you can choose the background photo, number of columns, column width, colors of text, etc. Lots more freedom than the regular templates, but fewer templates.
ReplyDeleteA couple months ago I was baking about half of our bread. Then things got crazier and I haven't done it since, but I'll probably go through another spurt of doing it after school starts up. Anyway, I found this recipe for no-knead whole wheat bread that turns out really well. http://www.progressivepioneer.com/progressive-pioneer/2010/03/no-fail-whole-wheat-bread-its-not-dense.html
ReplyDeleteYou do need a kitchenaid type mixer with a dough hook (so technically it is kneaded, just not by me).
We don't own a bread machine, but maybe we should--you seem to be getting good results with one.
By the way, your blog is great! Just like the homemade bread making, I go through spurts of trying to be greener and then things fall apart for awhile and then I get all motivated and try again! I'll definitely be checking this for ideas.
I have no mixer, but plan to try one of those no-knead recipes when i can stand to have my oven on for one hour -- maybe in the fall.
