Etsy discovery #5,044: stainless steel straws. Can you imagine? There is a person who makes stainless steel straws by hand from home. This is the joy of Etsy.
There is just one Etsy store that makes stainless steel straws, and it is The Mulled Mind. The Mulled Mind is owned by Heather Melling of Massachusetts, a mechanical engineer who is using her skills to help you kick your disposable plastic straw habit.

We've been making smoothies almost daily at my house lately. I use a regular cup with disposable plastic straw (which I reuse a few times before tossing, and, by the way, I have no idea what kind of plastic disposable plastic straws are made from). My 4 and 2-year-olds use plastic lidded cups with straws to drink the smoothies, but the reusable plastic straws were not working for us. Of course, I'm not thrilled with my kids sucking and slurping on plastic to begin with. But what I really hate is that my kids bite their plastic straws into tiny slits, and then the raspberry seeds or something else jam up the straw and they can't drink their smoothies. And then it's, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, until I bite their straw back into shape. And then they bite their straws into tiny slits again, and their straws get jammed, repeat ad nauseum.
The first time we used The Mulled Mind's steel straws a few weeks ago, I immediately noticed both kids biting on them. The look on my 2-year-old's face when she bit that hunk of steel was priceless. And the unsolicited endorsement from my 4-year-old: I like this straw, Mommy! We've been using them for all our smoothies ever since.
10 Things to Love About The Mulled Mind's
Stainless Steel Straws
- My children cannot bite them out of shape.
- Highly affordable. For example, $11.50 ($8 plus $3.50 for U.S. shipping) for a set of 4 regular drinking straws. Plus, all straws come with a lifetime guarantee.
- They are not plastic. No worries about leaching chemicals.
- They are reusable! No plastic or paper waste. Use your straw to become an activist!
- They are dishwasher safe.
- They won't break. I've discussed the glass straw vs. stainless steel straw dilemma with others. It's true with glass that it's easier to see if your straw is clean, and it's also probably true that it would require significant effort for you or your children to break a glass straw. But I've broken plenty of glass in my life (at the end of my illustrious stint in the organic chemistry lab, I owed the lab room upwards of $100 from broken lab equipment), and I feel more comfortable with stainless steel straws for both me and my kids. Also, if you plan to keep one or more reusable straws in your purse for eating out, you won't need a special case for steel straws.
- They come in various diameters and lengths. The short straws are perfect for my kids lidded plastic cups. I also got an extra long one that works with my tall stainless steel malt cup, which I make my smoothie in using an immersion blender. By the way, I found that the regular diameter straw worked just fine with our smoothies. The Mulled Mind also does special orders, so if you don't see the exact straw you want for sale in the shop, just ask!
- Comes with a cloth drawstring bag and pipe cleaner for cleaning them. And, thus, for the first time in my life, I realize why that crafty item sold in Michael's is called a "pipe cleaner." I put my straws through the dishwasher without rinsing first (this will not cut it with a smoothie), and they came out with some gunk inside, so I got to try out the pipe cleaner and it totally worked. For reasons unclear to me (maybe because the interior surface remains smoother?), the steel straws rinse out clean much more easily than plastic straws. To check if your straw is clean, just look through it towards a window or light. The very cute cloth drawstring bag is very handy for carrying the straws in your purse, or provides the wrapping for your eco-friendly gift.
- Made in the USA by an Etsy shop. I love to support handmade goods and the skilled artisans who make them.
- You can win your very own set of 2 short and 2 tall stainless steel straws courtesy of The Mulled Mind (see details below).

Hi there, I have been looking into reusable straws here lately and have not been able to decide which would be best for me. I am thinking the stainless since there is that non-breakable issue on my mind. So I am delighted for the opportunity to win. I use straws most every day for smoothies and iced tea.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!

We're in the process of reducing/eliminationg as much plastic as possible....My daughter loves her straw sippy cups, but I would prefer to replace them with something safer. I've also started drinking more healthy smoothies and would love to use them for that!

ReplyDeleteOK. I love this. I use some thick reusable plastic straws I got from Starbucks one summer. But they are all kinda bent from being in the dishwasher and I wonder if they are super clean in the middle anyway! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is AWESOME. Do they get super cold w/smoothies & shakes?
a
We would love these straws at our house! My kids are forever asking to use straws with their drinks {water, milk, juice, etc.} and I hate the waste. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are very cool. I also have wondered about the casualties of the glass straws. I think I'd be so fearful about them breaking that they just wouldn't get used. But these, however! My kids are straw people. Those and Olives seem to need constant restocking. I would love to have some of these in our drawers. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteThe mulled mind is and etsy favorite! What a great company. What a great way to use her talent.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to try reusable straws for awhile already. I get tired of my straws bending and slipping into the jug. I think these would be great and also help me eliminate more plastic from my life.

Roni Sue -- thanks for the kind words, and thanks for reminding me about the great prices. How could I forget that? I included that in the top 10.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I guess the part inside the drink gets pretty cold. I haven't noticed much (it would be more of a concern with a hot drink, I guess). I think the upper part is probably closer to room temperature.
Just tweeted it!
ReplyDeleteAnd totally heart-ed them on etsy! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'd really love to win these! My daughter is obsessed with collecting plastic straws. Even when she's not even drinking anything, she asks us to get her one at coffee shops and restaurants. We try to tell her how wasteful this is, and we don't give in, and then she has a fit. Yes, over straws.
ReplyDeleteI posted this giveaway on FB!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter loves drinking out of straws, especially when we go out, and then usually destroys a few of them throughout the meal. I would love to reduce waste and not worry about leaching chemicals. I hope I win!! (emilyfitz@cox.net)
ReplyDeleteI don't usually use straws because I hate using the plastic. I would definitely start using these!
ReplyDeleteAlso I have a new baby on the way. I have found how to make a sippy cup using a ball jar and putting a hole in the lid for a straw. A stainless steel straw would be perfect for this.
melissapapson at gmail dot com
I rarely use straws because they're plastic. If I had these, I think we'd be drinking smoothies with straws everyday.

An Etsy favorite!

We use plastic straws until they are too cracked/broken/bitten/bent to suck out of anymore! Haha. I have a plethora of pipe cleaners in a cup next to the sink to do the everyday task of rewashing our disposable straws. It may seem strange or sad, but we cannot imagine using something functional once and throwing it away. I would venture to say we have straws that over months old! With my yogurt and smoothie sucking machines we are always using them! Thanks!

What a great idea! I get so annoyed by plastic straws in restaurants. So glad there is an alternative!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cool--we are those evil parents who taught our kids to blow paper straw wrappers at each other. We really only use them when we go out places, but the kids would love to have them at home, and their mom would love to stick some in her purse so we can stop getting them when we go out!
ReplyDelete(my greenmomintheburbs has a gmail address of the same name!)
Thanks for this post--I hadn't known about the steel ones, only the glass ones, that have scared me on the breakable front. Awesome!

I try not to use plastic straws, but these would be great for the times when it's not really avoidable. I also think they would be great for sipping water while in labor!

I would love to win these straws as I've been on the hunt for ones that aren't plastic. My husband is disabled and is often in a position for optimal comfort where a straw would be very helpful in terms of drinking and taking his pills.

i think straws must be an east cost thing. since moving to nyc 8 months ago, i've been offered more straws than the five years i lived in ca. it sounds crazy, but it's true! ha. so yes, i will need some stainless steel straws pleasE!

What an interesting product! I don't usually use plastic straws, but my son and nephews use them often to drink juices in the playground or in children’s parties. I’d love to carry these stainless stell straws on my bag for my son to use. I love the fact that it’s something green and, at the same time, easy and affordable. Thank you! ReplyDeleteHere is how we LOVE using straws: we poke a hole with one directly into the top of a yogurt container and -- voila! a spill-free snack for the kids. I have been using the heavy water bottle type straws cut in half for years, but they are murky and chewed on and I would love a snazzy stainless steel straw to use when baby #4 is initiated into the yogurt club.

What an awesome giveaway! For awhile now, my family hasn't used disposable plastic straws because like you said, plastic leaches chemicals. However, my little sister loves straws, and that's why I want to win these - because she'd LOVE to be able to use straws again!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this opportunity!
I try not to use regular plastic straws very often, but it seems that every time I turn around, my 4yo has dug the bag out of the drawer and gotten herself a straw. It would definitely be greener (and cheaper!) to have a reusable straw!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is 2 and is in the habit of biting her straws also. I would love to win these for her, and I love the environmentally-responsible aspect of it also!
ReplyDeleteThese are awsome! I'm always buying straws because my whole family uses them for smoothies and lidded drink. I don't like the reusable plasic alternative because my boys eventually bend and break them. Thanks Betsy! -Angie
ReplyDeleteThe are awesome not awsome and this is Angie Tiemeyer! :)
ReplyDeleteThese look awesome! I'm thinking of splurging to get the stainless steel cups too :)
ReplyDeletenow let's see if someone can come up with a stainless steel 'crazy straw' - the kind that twirls around!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win these straws because if I won, I'll not use plastic ones anymore. It's actually a waste to use them and throw them after that. Also, it contributes to pollution.

We use TONS of disposable straws (five kids!) and would love to give these a try! :)
ReplyDeleteI would love those for my iced lattes in the summer. I might even share with my kids. :)
ReplyDeleteHow do you clean these? We had plastic bottles with straws that I could NEVER get clean - mold began to grow in them.
ReplyDeleteUnless these come with a tiny little brush, how can you be sure to get them clean?
Simply rinsing the insides with water won't do it.
Kim, I also have a long history with reusing plastic straws, and had to retire them all-to-soon b/c of grossness as well.
ReplyDeleteThe Mulled Mind includes a pipe cleaner with the straws. And with a little soapy water on it, that cleaned my steel straws just fine with minimal effort, even after NOT rinsing after drinking smoothies AND putting through the dishwasher (=dried on gunk inside). I think you will fine steel cleans much more easily than plastic, even with just rinsing. Steel is non-porous, and stays perfectly smooth. No little nicks or crannies for food to get caught in. You can look through your straw towards a light and see that it is absolutely clean, or see that there is a little fleck of something left. You should give them a try!
I don't use straws that often, but my kids love them.
ReplyDeleteI am a regular reader, thanks to my wife.

ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea. I'd like to win because I know I'll drink more water if I'm using a straw (weird, but true).

I use straws every day,I love a good straw. lol

I don't use straws that often, but my boyfriend and his daughters do. I am very big on recycling and not using throw-away things when possible, so these straws are a great idea!

my DS uses plastic straws daily (and annoyingly chews them, or used to, just like your kids). I don't use them as much - I *want* to, because I want to drink more green smoothies. maybe if I had these awesome straws I'd be more inspired :) amykannel at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteand I added the shop to my Etsy favorites :)
ReplyDeleteI can't stand my kids constantly biting their straws out of shape! These would be great.

We use straws all of the time. This would be fabulous! No more biting and bending. No more money down the tubes! Thanks!!

I use disposable straws almost daily, so I could TOTALLY use these! I love the fact that it's one less thing I'm throwing out.

I drink way too many carbonated drinks and would love to have these to at least make it a little better for my teeth.
